Nominate an HR Superhero!

We are now accepting nominations for the HR Superhero Award! This recognition program aims to celebrate and honor the outstanding contributions of an HR professional who exemplifies HR-related super hero qualities.

Eligibility Criteria
To qualify, a nominee must be:

A human resource professional for a minimum of one year. Students are eligible only if they meet the one year requirement.
Working in the human resource field at the time of the nomination.
Actively participating in local, regional, national and/or international HR-related activities.
There is no limit to the number of times a nominee may be nominated.

Nomination Submission

Nominations may be made by a SHRM or HRMN member, peer, community member, colleague, supervisor, or subordinate.
Self-nominations are highly encouraged.
Nomination forms must be completed in full to be considered.
There is no limit to the number of nominations a nominator can submit.
To submit your nomination, please fill out the nomination form linked below.
The deadline for nominations is April 5th.

Exciting Changes Coming to Our Chapter in April!

We’re excited to share some important updates coming to our chapter this April! As an affiliate of SHRM for several years, we are thrilled to announce our participation in SHRM National’s Dual Membership Release (DMR) program, launching on April 14, 2025.

What This Means for You

With this program, your chapter and SHRM National memberships will be combined into a single transaction and profile, all managed through SHRM’s robust system. Members will no longer need to pay separate chapter dues directly—instead, chapter membership will renew at the same time as SHRM membership.

This transition offers several key benefits:
✅ Streamlined membership management – No more separate payments or renewal dates.
✅ Increased efficiency – Administrative tasks are simplified, allowing us to focus on providing valuable programming and resources.
✅ Membership growth & retention – Leveraging SHRM’s branding and marketing will enhance our chapter’s reach and impact.

Membership Renewal Alignment

To implement this program, your chapter membership renewal date will be aligned with your SHRM membership renewal date. On April 14, your chapter membership will be:

Extended if it lasts less than your remaining SHRM membership period.
Shortened if it exceeds your SHRM membership period.

Depending on this adjustment, you may receive a credit or an invoice. After this one-time alignment, all future renewals will be seamless!

A New Name & Brand!

As part of this transition, we’re also embracing a fresh look! Our chapter will now be known as Flint Hills SHRM, reflecting our regional reach and strengthened partnership with SHRM. Now you won’t have to explain who “Herman” is and why he’s associated with your HR group! Expect to see a new logo and branding that better represents our HR community.

Continuing Our Mission

These changes will allow us to enhance our mission to Promote human resource best practices through education and collaboration, by serving professionals, organizations and communities.

HRMN awarded 2023 SHRM Learning System Champion Status!

HRMN earned accolades at the Volunteer Business Leaders Meeting in Washington DC for being honored as a SHRM Learning System Champion. This recognition reflects our steadfast dedication to assisting our members in their pursuit of SHRM Certification.

We extend our gratitude to Elizabeth Ward, our Certification Director and Nicole Douthit, for their outstanding efforts in organizing the study group for our chapter. The study group, comprised of 6 dedicated chapter members, is actively engaged in a 12-week course designed to prepare them comprehensively for the certification exam.

HR6201: Families First Coronavirus Response Act

There is a bill currently in-progress that if (and most likely when) passed will have an impact on employers, private and government entities both, in regards to FMLA, emergency paid sick leave, emergency unemployment insurance, employer tax credits for paid sick and paid family and medical leave act; as well as implications to other programs such as WIC, Tri-Care, Medicare, and others).

An overview as the Bill currently stands is provided. Please note (and you'll see it noted within too), this is not yet signed into law. Information is being released to help raise awareness for employers of what is on the horizon. If passed, it will be in effect through the end of 2020.

December Events charted as SUCCESSFUL!!!

December 5, Workforce Summit III-Diversity and Inclusion hosted approximately 50 Community professionals to discuss how diversity in our workplaces. Dr Brian Samuel, KSU Chief Diversity Officer, facilitated a terrific educational event for everyone in attendance!

December 7 and 14, HRMN Chapter members assisted the Riley Co EMS staff with filling the ambulance and gathering food and donations for the Flinthills Breadbasket.

December 18, the Chapter celebrated the successes of our year and was recognized for the Diversity efforts through the year with $500 from KS SHRM State Council Diversity Director, Lisa Carlton.

2019 Diversity and Inclusion Champion Award presented to Human Resources Manhattan Network

The Kansas State Council of SHRM recognized Human Resources Manhattan Network (HRMN) as they; model, encourage and promote diversity and inclusion in the community and the workplace. HRMN demonstrated work in the area of diversity and inclusion that goes above and beyond what is expected through normal organizational responsibilities. In addition, this organization has worked diligently in providing a positive impact on others in the community and the workplace. HRMN has involved community members in addressing their need to retain and recruit employees to the Manhattan community by offering a diverse and inclusive environment.

They are also hosting a Diversity Workshop open to the community in December.

The award was presented at the Kansas SHRM conference in September held in Overland Park, KS.

Cindy Volanti, HRMN President, and Jack Allston, Diversity Director of HRMN, accepted the award.

As part of the award a $500 donation will be made to HRMN to be used to support their Diversity and Inclusion efforts.

KS SHRM Council Gives Back

The KS SHRM Council awarded the Human Resource Management Network with a check for $780 as a Chapter that had attendance at State Conference over 25% of their total membership. Way to Go HRMN Chapter Members! We had 30 registrations for State Conference!!!

SHRM or HRCI certification Study Group beginning week of September 16, 2019

Human Resource Management Network (HRMN), in Manhattan, KS is hosting a study group for any individuals that are interested in obtaining either SHRM or HRCI certification this Fall. The study group will meet once a week for twelve weeks to prepare for the exam.

The group will study for SHRM or HRCI, so the group will have to agree on which exam to study for. Participants will purchase their own study materials (at a group discounted rate). Facilitators from HRMN will lead the study group and help prep for the exam.

This is a great opportunity for those that have been interested but haven’t yet taken that leap, or for those that are ready to study for the next level exam.

SHRM is accepting applications NOW through August 15, 2019, for members interested to take either the SHRM CP or SCP exam in 2019.

Help with HRMN Programs that benefit our chapter!

I am writing to you today to ask for your involvement in a workgroup to complete our 2019 Excel Award initiatives. This year, we are planning to apply for, and receive, the Platinum Award. To be considered for a Platinum Award requires four initiatives that fall into three different categories. Since we are taking on four initiatives, we want to include you!

Participation in a workgroup could include; taking a leadership role, planning, documentation, or simply providing ideas and feedback. Each workgroup would be responsible for assigning an award category, setting an official goal/objective, outlining the work towards accomplishing that goal, and documenting the outcome/result of the initiative. I plan to participate in each workgroup and provide guidance towards the successful completion of these four initiatives. You can review the 2019 SHRM Excel Awards Brochure if you would like more information.

Our Human Resources Management Network board members submitted seven great ideas for initiatives, and the following are the top four votes:

Student SHRM Chapter Initiative: Support the KSU Student SHRM chapter by creating alliances between the HRMN and student chapter officers and members. Increase HRMN presence and attendance at their meetings and events, and increase student attendance to HRMN meetings.
HRMN Networking Event at State Conference: Create a HRMN sponsored networking event for members that attend the Annual State SHRM Conference, providing additional opportunities to interact and talk about HR topics and build stronger work-relationships.
HR Professional of the Year Award Revamp: Revamp and update the HRMN HR Professional of the Year Award and use the new criteria to select the 2019 recipient.
HRMN Gives Back: Implement a philanthropy program where HRMN will donate money or items to select organizations. This initiative would increase HRMN’s participation with other organizations in the area, promote the group, and increase awareness in the community.

In case you are not sure why we want to take on four initiatives, or why we want to include all of our HRMN members, here’s why: The Excel Award goals and initiatives allow us to increase our group visibility and effectiveness, as well as expand impact within the HR community. In short, we want to support our chapter members as well as our surrounding communities!

So, if you would like to be more involved with HRMN, want to share your great ideas, or have a passion for any of the four ideas chosen – please let me know! I would like to have at least 2-3 members in each workgroup, and you can be in as many as you want. Please let me know by Friday, March 22, 2019 which group you would like to participate in.

How do you Handshake?

Employers can use the free K-State job board/career services platform – Handshake – to connect with K-State grads/alumni/students. Handshake is administered by the on-campus K-State Career Center and the K-State Alumni Association partners with the K-State Career Center with these services.

Employers can use K-State’s Handshake to post jobs of all kinds – full time, internships, seasonal, part time - and identify qualified candidates for their open positions. Employers can also use Handshake to register for K-State career fairs and manage on-campus recruitment activities. In turn, students and alumni can use Handshake to easily connect with employers, search for jobs and internships, review career fair/event information, and manage on-campus interviewing.

HRMN Members present at the Manhattan USD 383 Apprenticeship Career Fair

On May 2, Graduating Seniors and Local Businesses/Employers gathered for the Apprenticeship Career Fair in the Rezac Auditorium and Main Corridors of Manhattan High.

Apprenticeship programs through Department of Commerce-KANSASWORKS were presented to the participating employers by; Jo Brunner, Chastity Troxel and Joseph Comfort. Topics covered the advantages to employers of; the Workforce Innovations Fund, Kansas Health Professional Opportunities Program, Work Opportunity Tax Credits, and Opportunities to grow your workforce through Apprenticeships.

25 employers participated in the event and approximately 40 students attended. Students were able to walk to all tables to visit with the employers on their employment opportunities.

HRMN employers that participated included: Midwest Concrete Materials, GTM/Champion Sports Wear, Advanced Property Management, Bayer Construction, Blueville Nursery, Kansas State University Human Capital Services, Riley County and Meadowlark Hills Retirement Community.

The event was co-sponsored by the Pottawatomie County Economic Development, Wamego Chamber of Commerce and Manhattan Chamber of Commerce.

Coordination of the event was provided by; Jo Brunner, KANSASWORKS Supervisor and HRMN Member, Craig Poe, Midwest Concrete Materials Director of HR and HRMN Program Chair, and Jack Allston, Director of Pottawatomie County Economic Development Corp and HRMN Professional Development Chair.

This event is part of the HRMN EXCEL initiative program that focuses in the area of Advancing the HR Profession Category. “Initiatives advancing the HR profession by creating awareness with or supporting key constituents including workplace, government and regulatory representatives, employers, schools, media and the community at large. Activities may be outreach and awareness programs, government or public affairs, raising funds and supporting the SHRM Foundation’s annual initiative to build inclusive organizations, or focus on key issues such as inclusion, diversity, or workforce readiness.”

HRMN Members give preview for USD 383 Apprenticeship Career Fair

On April 11, Jo Brunner, KansasWorks Workforce Services Supervisor, and Craig Poe, Midwest Concrete Materials, Inc, Director of Human Resources provided an introduction to the May 2 Apprenticeship Career Fair.

Jo and Craig talked with the seniors who have indicated they will be going into the work force after they graduate from high school.

Areas they highlighted were:

How to prepare for an interview
Application and Resume Preparation
Professional Appearance and first impressions
Employability Skills (reliability, attitude, expectations from employers)

Approximately 50 students attended this briefing and heard more details of the upcoming Career Fair Day.
